How we picked and tested
This Conair tool is a favorite of Foster’s because of its powerful ion generator that reduces frizz. This model has a 1.5-inch titanium ceramic-coated barrel that distributes heat evenly, and its ionic technology ensures a no-frizz blowout, according to the brand. Hair dryer options are seemingly endless with features that seem more fussy than functional. We found the position of the speed and heat buttons on the back of the dryer’s head less than ideal, and the cool-shot button is in an awkward spot at the very top of the handle. If you don’t change speeds and temperature a lot, though, the button locations might be a bonus, as they are hard to hit accidentally.
Shark HyperAIR vs Dyson Supersonic: which hair dryer should you choose
The ionic tool also boasted another pleasant surprise — we didn't need to use a straightener as usual on our wavy hair to smooth out any remaining baby hairs. With the Nanoe, we were able to create a smooth look with a slight wave at the bottom, without the need for any follow-up tools. While our wavy hair did receive the results we set out to achieve (a straight blowout without the need for a follow-up tool), our coily hair still needed a second tool to straighten the ends. The wide-tooth comb wasn't particularly useful for drying our kinky hair, not completely drying it and leaving the ends puffy.
Shark HyperAIR vs Dyson Supersonic: key similarities
After putting in over 20 hours of research and spending over 70 hours testing 42 hair dryers, we’ve found that some are far more pleasant to hold and use than others. Because it provides an excellent experience for the price, we think the Rusk W8less Professional 2000 Watt Dryer is the best choice. It took about 45 minutes to one hour to do our entire head, and it was a workout.
Wavytalk Ionic Hair Dryer
Taking home top honors, the GAMA IQ2 Perfetto hair dryer is just about, well, perfetto. Our InStyle editor who tested this model has type 3B/3C coarse hair, with a mix of curls and coils that have only been relaxed once years ago, and found that the dryer took just under 15 minutes to diffuse and set her curls. To put it in perspective, our stylist estimated that a full blowout ordinarily would have taken about 25 minutes. Just like with their vacuums, Shark is obviously using the HyperAir IQ to go after the higher-end market that Dyson targets with their Dyson Supersonic and Airwrap Styler.
The 20 Best Hair Dryers of 2024, Tested & Reviewed
Time is money, and this tool gets my hair dry faster than any other product I've tested. Like the concentrator, the IQ Curl-Defining Diffuser also offers a more custom curl-enhancing experience that caters to your hair type. A lever on the side of the diffuser head lets you choose to either extend the diffusers prongs (a setting designed for longer hair and reaching the root) or retract them (which works well for shorter hair and drying your ends).
It offers seven suction power levels and three heat settings (high, low, or the no-heat cool shot). It’s no more effective than our other picks, but if you want the most pleasant hair-drying experience possible, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer provides that. This dryer has an unusual design that makes it extraordinarily nice to use.
The Supersonic has all the key factors our stylists say are most important, so it’s not surprising Dyson’s unique-looking machine tops our list. It comes with five styling attachments, including a diffuser, styling concentrator, flyaway attachment, gentle air attachment and a wide-tooth comb, which makes it ideal for all hair types, according to the brand. “It prevents heat damage by [self-regulating] direct heat on the hair strands, eliminating frizz and providing high shine, which is crucial when it comes to getting the perfect blowout,” says Foster.

best hair dryers for every hair type, approved by editors and experts
Unless you've got superhuman strength, holding a blow dryer above your head for minutes on end is tiring. No matter how strong your arms are, the Instyler Blu Turbo Ionic Hair Dryer feels lightweight in your hands and makes blow drying the top of your head a painless process. Equipped with one of the longest nozzle attachments we tested meant that we could direct heat in specific sections.
I'm a big fan of blow-dryer brushes, and the fact that this comes with an attachment for that is a huge selling point for me. It's essentially three tools in one, and I'm a sucker for a multiuse product. According to the Transportation Security Administration, you can pack a hair dryer in both carry-on luggage and checked bags. Scope out our travel-sized hair dryer recommendation, the SRI Dry Q, to learn more about our pick for the perfect journey-ready dryer. As the cute green color chipped off when we dropped it, the hair dryer may not be as durable as some of the other options on this list. Among the downsides, though, were the slightly confusing buttons, which don't clearly indicate the temperature, and a delay on the cold shot button, as well as the attachments.
Options are seemingly endless on the attachment front, but your hair type will drive your decisions there too. The Conair InfinitiPro SmoothWrap Hair Dryer is slower and has a shorter cord than all of our picks. However, it is lightweight (a pound), and it reaches temperatures above 245 °F. Although the Dyson dryer’s feel and attachments are improvements over those of our other picks, we also found features we didn’t like and a few that we were neutral on. We took basic stats on our dryers, using a weather meter to test the speed and heat and a postage scale to weigh them. From out-of-the-shower wet hair to styled and slim tendrils of curls, the entire process took about 45 minutes to one hour.

Despite our positive experience, we wish there were more bells and whistles.
Overall, we love the results it delivers, but would love it even more if it came with more attachments. Although these pieces snap onto the nozzle, they look as if they might screw on, which can be confusing at first. Starting from the bottom section, add about half an inch of thickness of hair into the tube and make sure it’s in the correct curling direction. You know it’s properly curling when you can see the hair circulating inside the tube. Carrie-Ann Skinner was formerly Homes Editor at TechRadar, and has more than two decades of experience in both online and print journalism, with 13 years of that spent covering all-things tech. Carrie specializes in smart home devices such as smart plugs and smart lights, as well as large and small appliances including vacuum cleaners, air fryers, stand mixers, and coffee machines.
“I prefer a thin attachment that helps concentrate air on a smaller section.” The Pattern Blow Dryer comes with brush, wide tooth comb, diffuser, and concentrator nozzle and is great for curly hair. The diffuser attachment, which looks like a hand, dried our hair in about eight minutes, which is super fast considering it usually takes us around 20 minutes. Even with the funky lime green hand attachment, the dryer is lightweight and easy to maneuver. The pro-grade dryer comes with an ionizer switch at the top that lets you customize your blowout to your needs.
It comes with a concentrator and a diffuser, too, making the process even easier. We were thoroughly impressed by the blowout produced by the INFINITIPRO SmoothWrap Hair Dryer, transforming our fine, wavy hair into a dreamy blowout in a matter of just 18 minutes flat. Even better, it wasn’t heavy or bulky, and didn’t aggravate our editor’s carpal tunnel. Although the 1,875-watt Revlon Compact Styler is a wallet saver at around $10, the savings do not make up for the dryer’s added heft, its lack of attachments, and its reduced wind speeds compared with those of our picks. The Remington Damage Protection Hair Dryer D3190 comes with a diffuser and a concentrator, but it’s bulkier and heavier than other models we tested. At an impressive 11 feet long, the currently unavailable CHI Touch 2 Dryer’s cord is the longest of any dryer we’ve tested, but this dryer is more expensive and much slower than the Rusk W8less.
This means that we have assessed how quickly they dry below-the-shoulder length (or longer) hair on all the heat and speed settings available to us on the device. We look out for things such as frizz and shine, and the overall finished effect that both the hair dryers have left our manes in after blowdry. The cable length, handy features such as hanging loops and cool shot buttons are also design elements that we look out for. If you don’t care about weight, consider the InfinitiPro by Conair 1875-Watt Salon Performance AC Motor Styling Tool. Commonly found in drugstores, this dryer produces airflow that’s faster (65 mph) than that of our top pick and almost as hot (205 °F).
All in all, though, the dryer’s power and price point pack a can’t-be-beat punch. Customer reviews of the 1,900-watt Parlux 3200 Hair Dryer were pretty good at the time of our research, and the compact design of this model is nice. But the buttons are positioned on the side, and they made the dryer hard for us to hold without getting poked in the hand. The Conair 1875-Watt 3-in-1 Ionic Styler has a long row of grills (and a brush attachment) instead of a circular nozzle. It gives you no way to attach a diffuser, which means you’re stuck with a single-purpose dryer. Despite the Supersonic’s flaws, compared with other dryers we’ve tested, this one truly feels like a luxury to use every day.
Shark HyperAIR vs Dyson Supersonic: Verdict
We were particularly pleased that using the nozzle in such a targeted way didn’t result in a scorching sensation. Quiet and controlled, the airflow and temperature were reflective of the dryer’s professional standing, and our hair and scalp didn't feel scorched, or even slightly overheated, at any point during the trial. At the hands of the luxe, lightweight and effective tool, the resulting blowout of our hair felt like a professional one. The diffuser seemed to mimic the movement of our hand when blast-drying the hair, which in turn helped to reduce any fatigue from holding the dryer.
Hot Tools Pro Artist Black Gold Ionic Hair Dryer
Unlike on other dryers, the cool-shot button is wide, so holding it down for several seconds isn’t uncomfortable. For the initial iteration of this guide, we timed the models drying a swatch of hair from a wig wetted with 5 grams of water, with the dryers on their highest setting. If you want a hair styling tool specifically for curling your hair quickly or styling your hair in big bouncy curls, the HyperAir IQ is not the tool for you.

There’s a Volume Boost button that adds volume and texture, and inside the T3 is a smart microchip that digitally controls 15 heat and speed combinations. It comes with a paddle brush, a round brush, a drying concentrator that provides a wide airflow to help your hair dry faster, and a styling concentrator to focus air on one section at a time. If you want a diffuser or smoothing comb, you’ll need to purchase it separately.
Shark HyperAIR vs Dyson Supersonic: key similarities
The Hot Tools Professional Black Gold Turbo Ionic Salon Dryer (DC Motor) is extremely light at only 14 ounces. But it also has the most buttons and slides and switches of any hair dryer we’ve ever tested, including a cool-shot button, a power-boost slide, an ion select wheel, and switches for speed and temp—whew! Speed and heat are the only features that matter for drying your hair efficiently, and with a 55 mph airflow that exceeds 245 °F, the Rusk W8less Professional 2000 Watt Dryer is one of the fastest and hottest dryers we tested. It weighs less than a pound, it has an 8-foot cord (one of the longest we found), it’s notably comfortable to hold, and overall it has the best combination of features we deem important.

For example, we purchased the Premium Styling Tools bundle that came with all four of the attachments (and filter brush), hair clips, and a nonslip mat. The design lends itself to being more balanced and, in theory, more ergonomically pleasant to use. However, placing the motor inside of the handle means an ultra-light barrel that leads to an awkward weight imbalance, most noticeable when I was maneuvering it around my head to dry my roots before moving onto styling. There are many different hair styling gadgets on the market that use top technology and promise wonderful results, but the HyperAIR is laden with features that really make it stand out. With a super chic vortex design that helps to control airflow and a matte caramel colorway, the Pattern’s good looks are only the beginning of its story as a curl-enhancing hot tool.
The Best Hair Straightener
This hair dryer may not have all the bells and whistles of the fancier (and pricier) options on this list, but it gets the job done beautifully. We found this dryer to be one of the most powerful we’ve ever tested and were shocked that it dried our thick, wavy hair in less than 10 minutes. The gorgeous GHD Helios 1875W Advanced Professional Hair Dryer is heavier and slower than our pick, the Rusk W8less—and three times the price.
Shark HyperAir vs. Dyson Supersonic: Which is better?
We love a good multitasking product, and the Shark HyperAir Hair Dryer is certainly no exception to the rule; it’s an ideal choice for those seeking the best dryer-brush combo. Our fine, dense and wavy hair benefited from a 30-minute blowout, which left it smooth, without any noticeable flyaways. We didn't love the design of the buttons; the temperature settings, for example, required two hands to adjust, and the lock button on the handle was located too close to the on switch. Although first impressions aren’t everything, the sleek design of this T3 hair dryer nearly won us over, although we were curious whether such a small hair dryer would be powerful enough for a proper blowout. We have thin hair, and not a lot of it, so we need our hair dryer to be strong enough to whip up a serious amount of volume, and this little guy did just that.
Designed as a gentler solution to the typical damage-wreaking dryer, the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer is our top choice for damaged tresses in dire need of some TLC, delivered in a visually appealing and lightweight package. While the airstream wasn't as concentrated as we might have liked, it nonetheless earns top marks as an option for those struggling with damaged hair, with its intentionally quieter airflow. When tested on long, thick and curly hair, we found the Halo offered a 54-minute blowout that left it looking smooth, straight and less frizzy when compared to our blowout pre-Halo. Our one caveat is that the blow dryer wasn’t exactly easy on our arms. While this hair dryer works with all hair types, those with thick hair will especially love the blend of power and performance that this option provides.
Just about on par with models that are double its price, the InfinitiPRO by Conair DigitalAire Dryer gets the frizz out, taming tortured hair smooth with ease. In fact, it blew out our fine, wavy hair within 30 minutes, commanding an airflow so strong that it sent the curtains swaying in our room. (That force is likely due to the fast-moving digital motor, which revs at 90,000 times per minute!). Our fine hair tends to get frizzy, but this hair dryer tamped down on our flyaways while amping up our much-needed volume. The Revlon 1875-Watt Infrared Hair Dryer produced a wind speed of 45 mph (measured directly in front of the nozzle), slower than the speed we got from our picks. It weighs just over a pound, has a cord measuring 5.5 feet, and comes with a concentrator and a diffuser.
Although there are only three heat settings — low, medium, and high — it really felt like there was a difference between each level, while still putting out a consistent stream of air. We mostly stayed with the medium setting because the highest option was so hot that it was uncomfortable at times. We dry our hair once or twice a week, and our favorite style to create is a traditional full-bodied, bouncy blowout, which was easy to accomplish with this dryer — and fast. We also tried the Hot Tools One-Step Detachable Straight Dry Paddle Dryer and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler, both of which were clunkier, heavier, and slower to dry hair than the Conair. Their designs also made it difficult for us to directly reach hair roots compared with the other paddle-style hair dryer brushes we tested.
In addition to plenty of space, this hair bonnet also has a wider edge than most to keep your baby hairs in place. Our best overall pick is the Grace Eleyae All Silk Turban, which is adjustable, made of pure silk, and boasts a luxurious skin feel. For a more affordable pick, consider the Kitsch Satin Sleep Cap also helps keep hair smooth and frizz-free. If you’re feeling a bit indecisive, this bonnet comes in plenty of patterns and colors, and it has two wearable sides so you can switch things up to get the most out of your sleepwear.

Its secure, extra wide band is designed to stay in place, but is also flexible enough to prevent a dreaded forehead line. You will want to look for a bonnet for natural hair that will hold all of your hair. If you have a lot of heavy hair, look for a large, long bonnet. If you have shorter hair, a long bonnet might get caught and be pulled off of your head, so choose a smaller size that suits you.

It’s also adjustable with a drawstring and made of high-grade double-layered satin for increased durability that the brand swears by, with a one-year guarantee. This one from SILKE London is made using 100 percent mulberry silk. It’s soft to the touch and protects the hair from pulling and breakage. All bonnets by Cee Cee's Closet, a brand founded by Chioma and Uchenna Ngwudo in New York City, are handmade in Nigeria. For each section, I add the setting lotion at the beginning, but also put a little water on my comb to make sure the ends are damp. This helps make rolling those little ends easier, as well as ensuring a nice curl in the morning.
What hair types benefit most from silk bonnets?
Aside from the luxurious silk, our favorite feature is that it has an adjustable ribbon so that you can tie your sleep cap to your desired tightness to keep it in place all night long. The thick yet non-abrasive elastic keeps the bonnet secured to your head for long nights while protecting your edges and fitting to a wide range of head sizes. Keep it handy as a low-risk bonnet to stow in your overnight bag, so you’re protected on the go.
If you're a fan of Pattern's beauty award-winning products, then you'll definitely love this cap that's made with high-quality, double-lined black satin to keep short and medium-length curls in top shape overnight. This pure silk bonnet from Silke London doesn't just feel luxurious — it also looks sophisticated and chic. "Doesn't give me a headache or hurt my ears. Keeps hair neat and in place and it actually looks shinier in the morning." Whether you've got waist-grazing locks or a head-full of box braids, this extra-large sleeping cap is sure to keep your style protected while you snooze.
This sleep cap has a wide edge that lays flat against your head all-night long so it won't slip and slide. "This is the only bonnet I repurchase over and over again," says Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab analyst, Jodhaira Rodriguez. "It stays on through the night even when I move around a lot while I sleep, but isn’t uncomfortably tight and actually holds all my hair." When it comes to silk or satin (or even satin silk), experts recommend either or, depending on your style preference and budget. "A silk bonnet is made up of natural fibres, while a satin bonnet is a combination of different fabrics like nylon, polyester. Silk or satin bonnets provide all those benefits wrapped up in plush, soft fabric that makes styling your hair the next morning a more seamless process.
A bonnet that's comfortable AND stays put throughout the night is a win. This one is made using 100 percent silk, and it's meant to help the hair retain moisture from serums and treatments overnight. When your wet set is dry (usually overnight for me), you’ll undo the scarf and brush out all the curls. As a follow up to this post, I’ll share some tips on how I do a brush out and style, but until then you can check out my hyper-lapse Instagram post on a brush out.
The first step in the wet set is sectioning your hair into manageable parts. For me, I prefer to get my proper part right before anything else. Then I separate my hair into a back section, two sides, and the top. I use the end of the rat-tail comb to create the sections, and the claw clips to hold everything in place.

Sleeping without one can dry your hair out, cause breakage, and force you to buy even more hydrating shampoos and hair growth supplements to reverse the damage. For me, sunscreen is an absolute must, and hair bonnets are as essential as oxygen. Not to be dramatic, but the last time I went to bed without a hair bonnet, I woke up to find my pillowcase covered in hair oil (bad for my skin) and my hair a hot, frizzy mess (bad for, well, me).
This satin hair bonnet has an ultra-wide headband, so you won’t have to deal with readjusting because of tension headaches or frizzy edges. From drawstrings to elastic bands and adjustable ribbons, how a bonnet secures to your head will make or break your experience. Each pick on this list is ultra comfy and hits that sweet spot between too tight and too loose so you won’t have to worry about discomfort, tension headaches, or your bonnet slipping off while you sleep. Plus, many of them have ultra-wide bands so you can lay your edges with ease. These stylish bonnets have an option for all of your hair needs, with sizes ranging from medium to XXL.
“All hair types can benefit from a bonnet, but it’s most used for curly and coily hair types to help protect and strengthen the natural curl patterns,” explains Taylor. They're also fantastic for fighting breakage, which are problems that those with textured hair tend to face often. Including one of the best hair bonnets as part of your night time routine is seriously underrated. Sure, they've been the talk of the internet ever since Love Island ‘s Kaz Kamwi started religiously matching one with her PJs.
She argues that a more expensive hair bonnet is worth the price and is always better for your hair health in the long term. However, she reminds clients to pick a hair bonnet that has the best fibers within their budget. While anyone can wear a hair bonnet, they're most often used to protect and strengthen those with curly, coily, or fine hair. We recommend wearing one of these beauty staples each night after applying your conditioner for ultimate hydration. You won't have to worry about waking up with unsightly forehead lines after wearing this comfy sleep bonnet from Kitsch.
It prevents frizziness and reduces thinning, without forming split ends. Scarfs are great for those wanting control of how the hair is protected underneath and bonnets are an easy way to contain and protect the hair,” Holdsworth says. Click here to see more hair bonnet with free shipping included.

SILKE London Hair Wrap
Glow by Daye’s fan-favorite bonnets come double-lined with satin inside the cap to protect your hair and satin on the outside for a comfier sleep. Hundreds of reviewers also note this hair bonnet is fantastic for anyone who is a restless sleeper. “It has the absolute best staying power of any bonnet I have ever tried, and I toss and turn a lot — so that is really saying something,” says one 5-star review. Most uniquely, the brand carries medium-large and toddler sizes, which isn’t the norm based on my hours of research on hair bonnets. Another hair staple that's almost too stylish to sleep in, this cheery marigold wrap makes it easy to customize your bonnet look, and is lined with satin to keep just about any style in tact overnight. The options on this list range from around $5 for satin to upwards of $75 for 100 percent silk.

It's made with stretchy jersey fabric for maximum comfort, but lined with satin to minimize frizz and friction as you snooze. I can't exactly pinpoint when I first started sleeping in hair scarves and bonnets at night, but I can say they're still very much undefeated for holding down my curls, braids, and blowouts with expert precision. This miniature piece will do wonders for a developing child’s hair growth. Bald spots where your baby sleeps are usually considered a simple part of life, but by reducing friction with this charmeuse satin bonnet, you can give your child’s hair a chance to grow no matter how they sleep. With sizes ranging from newborn to large for adults, this bonnet has got you covered every step of the journey.

The 12 Best Hair Bonnets to Fight Frizz, Breakage, and More
Silk bonnets are also known to keep your locks in optimal form by protecting hair from breakage as it causes less friction and tension on the hair, than other materials. They also help control tangling and leave your hair feeling super soft! It therefore serves as the perfect material for all hair types of hair but especially for hair that is dry and prone to breakage.
While silk pillowcases are popular amongst the curly hair tribe, and silk scrunchies add an elegant touch to any old bun, the best hair bonnets are specifically designed to allow the hair to sit freely inside them. This also means avoiding any involuntary pulling or tugging of your hair while you’re asleep. Satin bonnets and headwraps can certainly get the job done, but nothing is quite as effective at retaining moisture than silk. Silke is one maker of functional silky headpieces that are pretty enough to be worn everywhere. When brand founder Maria Sotiriou was experiencing split ends and breakage, she looked back to her Caribbean heritage to remember the importance of covering your hair at night.
We style it, deep condition it, and even spend hours on protective styles, so the last thing that any of us want to do is ruin all of that progress overnight. That's where silky bonnets come to play; they're ace at maintaining moisture and preventing harmful friction that can lead to breakage and bad hair days. Once you finish putting all your hair in rollers, you’re now done! My favorite ones are this orange satin kind that I typically find by the hair brushes at Target. Of all the products I’ve used to wet set or pin curl my hair, pillow rollers with a satin bonnet are by far the most comfortable to sleep in.
Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy. Finding an option made out of silk or satin is key to protecting your precious strands. I separate the sections into three long sections and continue the process the same way as the rest of my head. You know you’re putting the curlers in right if the curler is in front of the hair and fully visible in the mirror before rolling.
The best hair bonnets in particular are like silk and satin force fields that protect hair as you sleep, minimizing frizz and mid-night snags that can contribute to breakage. And while anyone can wear a bonnet at night (or at any other tine for that matter), they're most often used to protect fine, curly, and natural hair types. Not only does it fit most adult-sized heads, but the silk-satin lining also ensures all hair types remain frizz-free and soft. Reviewers say it is lovely for protecting their curly and coily textures. Notably, many with brands, twists, and other protective hairstyles say that it can accommodate their tresses. When it comes to styles, we've come a long way since the bonnets our mothers and grandmothers used to wear.
If you're looking to protect your natural hairstyle, silk and satin hair caps for sleeping are a staple to have in your arsenal. Sleep caps reduce friction between your hair and pillow while you sleep, which keeps curls defined and hydrated, protects hair from split ends and shields against frizz. Hair caps are great for women with extremely dry hair since they help to lock in moisture, says Kiyah Wright, a celebrity hairstylist in Beverly Hills, California. While solutions like silk pillowcases can help, silk hair caps for sleeping go the extra mile by fully encasing your hair, keeping friction to a minimum. Plus, bonnets lock in any products that you use on your hair before bed, which means that they actually absorb into your hair, not your pillowcase.
Just make sure that it is real satin made with synthetic materials and not sateen, a cotton-weave often used in pillowcases and bedding. “Although both are renowned for their ability to protect your hair from damage, their individual merits can make them better suited for different purposes,” Holdsworth says. She advises investing in satin bonnets if you run hot throughout the night. With so many options available, we understand that it can be a bit confusing to figure out which bonnet is truly worth the buy. To make it easy to find an essential to suit your style and desired amount of head space, read on for the best hair bonnets from beloved brands like Pattern and Kitsch worth adding to your nightly beauty routine. This 100 percent mulberry silk bonnet is light, breathable, and the perfect size to protect shorter strands without all the extra fabric.
